Jan 31, 2007, Healthy Eating and Exercise

I talked about our family focusing on eating healthy this year in the January Kids Cooking Newsletter. I think we are doing really well and part of that goal was for my husband and I to get more exercise. The usual January/start of the year goal! Groan!

It is always hard to work exercise into our schedule and the motivation is usually lacking on my part. However we are trying. One thing we've done is let the rest of the family know when we accomplished our goal for the day. Yea, mommy exercised during naptime or Yea, dad got up early and exercised today. That gets the kids attention and they understand it is important to do.

Our kids get lots of exercise running around the house and playing but they also enjoy doing aerobics (if only for a few minutes) alongside me, having mom or dad chase them around the yard or dance to music. These are all great oppurtunities to exercise and get the kids involved.
Another idea is to get a kids exercise video. One I reccomend is Yoga Kids.

My 3 year old loves this and wants to do this everyday. I see they have a Volume 2 I might have to buy also. The Yoga Kids have fun being animals, trees and triangles. It is a lot of fun. I tried to do it with my daughter the other day and she told me "No mom this is MY exercise video!"

Jan 26, 2007, Grow your own bean sprouts

I was discussing with a few moms on a forum about my kids snacking on bean sprouts. We sprout our own bean sprouts and they really do like them and eat them. I think the main reason is my kids get to watch the whole sprouting process so they enjoy them more. This is so typical of cooking with your kids. If they get a chance to be a part of the creating, mixing or choosing they really are more apt to try something new.

Just a few days ago they saw me rinsing the beans and were upset they weren't ready for eating yet. Wow I had no idea when I started this it would be such a hit. If you want to sprout your own beans you can see the link below for directions. I've updated the page with pictures today.

Jan 22, 2007, Easy Meal ideas and tips

These tips came from the Betty Crocker 2007 calendar which is no longer available online.

1. Eliminate cleanup by using tin foil packets to grill your food.

2. Use individually frozen chicken breasts, pork chops or fish fillets from the freezer section. When ready to cook remove the number you need.

3. Don't rinse your pasta after cooking as sauces will cling better.

4. Cube leftover chicken, turkey, ham or beef and freeze in 1 cup amounts. Use them to toss into salads, soups or casseroles.

5. If you make chili the day before and let the flavors mix it will taste better.

6. Bake meat loaf in mini loaves and it will bake faster.

7. Serve dinner buffet style from the slow cooker.

8. Make a double batch of casseroles or cookies and store in the freezer until you need a quick meal.

9. When checking out at the grocery store bag perishables and nonperishables separately to make unloading easier.

10. Cook one dish meals where everything cooks in one skillet or baking dish.

I'm looking for a Kids Valentine recipe that I can add to my newsletter Kid Chef section in the next month. A picture would be great but I'll take it one way or the other. If you don't have an idea but want to try one and take a picture find something at the link below.

I always love to hear from my readers whether it be ideas you use while cooking with your kids, recipes your kids love to make or questions you might have. No matter the season feel free to contact me through my contact page on the left navbar.

Jan 19, 2007, Winning Snacks for Kids' Sports Events

"By making a snack with your children, you are achieving four goals: providing a nutritious yet delicious treat, teaching them some new skills that are fun, help them learn about healthy foods, and having quality parent-child time."

My favorite quote from this article. "This is also a good opportunity for nutrition lessons that unfold as part of an ordinary conversation, not a preachy sermon."
