The Head Chef Notes

Happy New Year! It is the season of new beginnings and goal setting. One of the many new year's resolutions is eating healthier and exercising more. So like every year I'm going to try to make this a top priority again and involve my kids right along with me.

A little less chocolate and sweets and a little more fresh fruits and vegetables this year. (hopefully we will make it past January!)

Whatever your families new year's goals are, we hope you make cooking with your kids one of them. Here are some recent pages we've added for your kid chefs...
If you need some indoor fun ideas try the Kids Craft Recipes. Or cook up some winter fun recipes here Cold Weather Recipes.

Ask the Head Chef

Help my kids make such a mess when cooking.

I hear this a lot and the most important thing I can say, is use this as a teaching opportunity. Teach them to clean up any spills as they occur, sweep with a broom, and wipe counters. Help them realize this is part of cooking and try to make it fun and not a chore. Kids will be kids and messes will occur so try to enjoy the time in spite of it all!

Email us with your questions.
Until next issue, Enjoy cooking with your kids!

Measuring Accurately in baking

It is important to get the right amount of ingredients in whatever you are making to have the end result turn out successful. Allowing your kids to practice measuring ingredients can make cooking easier for them. If your kids are young we have a lesson in the 3-6 year old group that does just that but even if they are older they will still benefit from this lesson.

Tips for accurate measuring of ingredients:
  • Use measuring cups for dry ingredients.

  • When measuring liquid ingredients use a glass or plastic measuring cup and read the measurement at eye level.

  • When measuring flour or sugar fill cup then level with a table knife.

  • For shortening pack measuring cup with a spatula and level off the top.

  • When measuring butter in block form, soften slightly and pack into a measuring cup. Level with a knife

  • When measuring tablespoons and teaspoons fill to the top and level off if it is a dry ingredient.

  • Allowing your child to practice without cooking something will help them develop this skill.
