If you are wondering how to get your kids involved in all the baking and holiday cooking check out our kids thanksgiving recipes page for tips, recipes and ideas.A twist on a sweet potato dish that the kids can help adults put together. You can prepare this a day ahead and bake 25 minutes before serving dinner. Sweet Potatoes Dish 5 large sweet potatoes 1/2 Cup butter melted 1/4 Cup + 2 Tablespoons brown sugar 2 large eggs 2/3 Cup Orange juice 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/3 Cup flour 1/4 Cup oats 1/3 Cup chopped nuts Adult can bake sweet potatoes by placing in a baking dish. Poke with forks several times. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes or until fork can be inserted in middle easily. Let cool. Cut sweet potatoes in half and kids can scoop out pulp into bowl. Kids can do the remaining of the recipe with a little adult's help. Add butter and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar to sweet potatoes. Beat together. Add in eggs, orange juice, 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. Mix until well blended and smooth. Pour into baking dish. Flatten sweet potatoes smooth. In separate bowl, mix together topping ingredients, flour, oats and nuts. Then add in 1/4 Cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Mix together then blend in 1/4 cup butter with fork or clean hands. Mixture should be crumbly. Sprinkle over top of sweet potatoes. Adult can bake in 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. Celebrate some fresh vegetables from the harvest with this recipe. Brussel Sprouts with Sweet potatoes 1-2 sweet potatoes peeled and cut in 1 inch cubes 3/4 lb. brussel sprouts 1 Tablespoon butter 1/4 cup chicken broth 1 Tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 2 Tablespoons chopped nuts Boil sweet potatoes in water. Cook until sweet potatoes are tender or you can insert a fork easily in a cube. Drain and set aside. Cut brussel sprouts in half and cook in boiling water about 5 minutes. Drain. In saucepan, adults can melt butter. Add cooked sweet potatoes, cooked brussels sprouts and add remaining ingredients. Cook several minutes. Look toward the holidaysAfter Thanksgiving is over, it isn't too early to start your holiday baking. Most cookies and candies freeze well so you can bake a little at a time for the busy holiday season.
