Could you give a word of
advice for moms who are trying to get their
kids
interested in eating healthy?
My biggest word of advice for moms who are trying to get their kids
interested in eating healthy is to have FUN!!! One of the best parts of
having kids is getting to see life through their bright eyes! So when
you want to get your kids on board for something like healthy eating
try making a game out of it!
Look at your kitchen through the eyes of
your little one and suddenly the salad spinner becomes a merry-go-round
for lettuce and the sink turns into a carwash for vegetable shaped
vehicles! Use mini cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes in fruits and
vegetables. Involve them in selecting and preparing their food as often
as possible! Kids are far more likely to try a new food if they helped
to prepare it. Forcing our kids to eat healthy isn't fun for
anyone...besides it far more effective in the long run to inspire our
children to want to make healthy eating choices.
What is your favorite way or a way that helps you get kids to eat 5
a
day?
Our favorite way to get kids excited about eating 5 a day is to think
in terms of color! By using a rainbow as a guide we can get kids
thinking about eating fruits and vegetables based on color groups!
Eating the 5 colors of a rainbow everyday is a fun and easy way to get
kids eating their fruits and veggies!
You have several products
available that can help kids get involved
in
eating healthy and eating 5 a day. Can you tell our readers about them?
We love creating tools that help parents set healthy eating habits in
fun ways! Our make product is called the Today I Ate A Rainbow kit! The
interactive chart gets kids excited to eat their fruits and veggies
because as soon as they eat one they get to put up the corresponding
magnet color on their chart with the goal of eating 5 colors every day!
This gives kids a sense of achievement, hands on fun and it helps the
parents keep track of what their child has eaten! Also included in the
kit is a color coded shopping list (so that parents remember to Buy a
Rainbow!) and our book called The Rainbow Bunch which is about a group
of 5 kids that go from not eating any fruits and veggies to kids that
eat rainbows and feel great!
We will be adding more books to the
Rainbow Bunch series in the next year, eventually each of the rainbow
bunch characters will have their own story in the series! Our goal is
to inspire parents and children to come together with tools that make
it fun and easy to make healthy eating choices!
Do your kids help cook in the kitchen? If so what are some of their
favorite tasks.
Oh yes! My daughter has been helping out since she was
a toddler! She is very comfortable in the kitchen and loves helping
out! She washes our fruits and veggies, helps pour ingredients, sifts
and stirs, sets the table, the older she gets the more helpful she
becomes!
When your child first starts "helping" out in the kitchen it
tends to make things take longer and be more messy but it is very worth
it because down the road they really do become helpful! There are some
things like making smoothies that my daughter now does all on her own!
When we make our favorite snack Kale Chips. I end
up being her helper! I think getting kids in the kitchen is a
great way to spend time together, pass on cooking skills and foster a
love and appreciation for healthy food!
