Lesson 8

Today, Kids Cooking Lessons will teach your chef-in-training about reading nutrition labels on food. This is a great way for kids to learn how healthy the food they're eating is or is not.

Kids Cooking Lessons Part 1: Reading Labels

You can learn a lot about the contents of the food we eat if you understand what the food label is telling you. Please print and read off the following article about how to read food labels.

Reading labels will help you know how much sugar or other ingredients are in the food we eat. To practice healthy eating, talk to your child about what the label should say.

For example if you have a bag of potato chips. What is the serving size, how many calories in that serving size, how much fat grams?

Take a tour of your kitchen and read the labels on cans, packages, and even milk jugs.

15 oz. can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
1 garlic clove, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 Cup cold water

Have the chef-in-training open beans with can opener and drain liquid out.
