Lesson 8

Today, Kids Cooking Lessons will teach your chef-in-training about reading nutrition labels on food.

Part 1: Reading Labels

You can learn a lot about the contents of the food we eat if you understand what the food label is telling you. Please print and read off the following article about food labels.

Reading labels will help you know how much sugar or other ingredients are in the food we eat. To practice healthy eating, talk to your child about what the label should say.

For example if you have a bag of potato chips. What is the serving size, how many calories in that serving size, how much fat grams?

Take a tour of your kitchen and read the labels on cans, packages, and even milk jugs.

Part 2: Making Hummus

15 oz. can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
1 garlic clove, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 Cup cold water
5 Tablespoons lemon juice
1/3 Cup tahini paste

Have the chef-in-training open beans with can opener and drain liquid out. (don't forget to reiterate part 1 by checking out the label) Place beans in a bowl and mash with a potato masher or have adult use the food processor. Stir in garlic clove, salt, cold water, lemon juice and tahini paste. Eat with pita bread.
