In large steamer, cut cabbage in quarters and cut the quarters in half. Add sausage cut in 1/4" slices, and 1/2 onion diced. Bring to boil for 15 minutes. Reduce heat and steam for 20 to 30 minutes longer. Add spice, turn off heat and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.
The main benefit of preparing in this manner is so that the meat fat drips below the pan and meat is cooked evenly.
