Basic Sugar Cookie Dough
This classic sugar cookie dough is perfect for Christmas cut out cookies, decorating parties, classroom baking activities, and homemade edible gifts.
Prep Time: 20 minutes plus chilling
Bake Time: 7-9 minutes
Yield: About 2-3 dozen cookies
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond or lemon extract
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Directions
- In a mixing bowl, cream together butter, powdered sugar, egg, milk, and extracts.
- In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
- Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture and mix until dough forms.
- Shape dough into a ball, wrap, and chill for 2 hours.
- Roll dough onto a lightly floured surface.
- Cut shapes using holiday cookie cutters.
- Bake at 375 degrees F for 7-9 minutes.
- Cool completely before decorating.
Decorate with royal icing, buttercream frosting, sprinkles, candies, sanding sugar, or edible glitter.
