Basic Sugar Cookie Dough

Rolling sugar cookie dough for Christmas cookies

This classic sugar cookie dough is perfect for Christmas cut out cookies, decorating parties, classroom baking activities, and homemade edible gifts.

Prep Time: 20 minutes plus chilling
Bake Time: 7-9 minutes
Yield: About 2-3 dozen cookies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond or lemon extract
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Directions

  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together butter, powdered sugar, egg, milk, and extracts.
  2. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
  3. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture and mix until dough forms.
  4. Shape dough into a ball, wrap, and chill for 2 hours.
  5. Roll dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  6. Cut shapes using holiday cookie cutters.
  7. Bake at 375 degrees F for 7-9 minutes.
  8. Cool completely before decorating.

Decorate with royal icing, buttercream frosting, sprinkles, candies, sanding sugar, or edible glitter.
