Prep: 5- 10 minutes | Cook: 3- 5 minutes | Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb broccoli, cut into florets
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest, finely grated
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Optional Cheesy Topping

  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Place broccoli florets in a microwave-safe casserole dish.
  2. Add ¼ cup water. Cover with a microwave-safe lid or vented cover.
  3. Microwave on HIGH for 3–5 minutes, or until broccoli is bright green and tender-crisp (cook longer if you like softer broccoli).
  4. Carefully drain off the water.
  5. Season with lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Toss gently to coat.

Optional Cheesy Broccoli

  1. Sprinkle broccoli with shredded cheddar cheese.
  2. Microwave 1–2 minutes, or until cheese is melted.

Kid-Friendly Tips

  • Kids can help wash broccoli and sprinkle seasonings
  • Adults should handle draining hot water and removing the hot dish
  • Teach kids “zesting” safety—adults should zest the lemon

Notes

Microwave times vary by wattage and the size of florets. Start with 3 minutes and check. For extra flavor, add a squeeze of lemon juice after cooking.
