Prep: 15 minutes | Cook: 6–10 minutes | Yield: 6 patties

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 2½ cups beef broth
  • 1 (6 oz) jar sliced mushrooms, drained
  • 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 onion, grated
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1½ lbs ground beef

Instructions

  1. In a microwave-safe casserole dish, whisk cornstarch and beef broth until smooth (no lumps).
  2. Stir in mushrooms, Worcestershire sauce, and dried basil. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix egg, bread crumbs, grated onion, seasoned salt, and pepper.
  4. Add ground beef to the bread crumb mixture and mix until combined. Shape into 6 patties.
  5. Place patties into the casserole dish with the broth/mushroom mixture.
  6. Cover with a microwave-safe lid or vented cover and microwave on HIGH for 6–10 minutes, or until patties are cooked through.
  7. Halfway through cooking, carefully rotate/turn patties for even cooking.
  8. Let stand 2–3 minutes before serving to allow gravy to thicken.

Kid-Friendly Tips

  • Kids can whisk the broth mixture and help shape patties (wash hands first!)
  • Adults should handle the hot casserole dish and check doneness
  • Teach food safety: ground beef should reach 160°F in the center

Serving Ideas

  • Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles
  • Add steamed peas or green beans on the side

Notes

Microwave cooking times vary by wattage and dish size. If patties aren’t fully cooked, microwave in 1-minute increments. Whisk broth and cornstarch well at the start for the smoothest gravy.
