Main ingredients: 5 | Kid jobs: brush pan, crack eggs with help, whisk
Popovers are a simple baking lesson that helps kids see how steam makes batter rise. The outside becomes golden while the inside stays light and hollow.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions
Adult: Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Melt the butter and use it to brush the bottoms and sides of a muffin pan.
Child: Crack the eggs into a mixing bowl and whisk them with the milk.
Add the flour and salt.
Whisk until the batter is blended. A few small lumps are fine.
Pour the batter into the prepared muffin cups, filling each cup about halfway.
Adult: Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the popovers are tall and golden brown.
Carefully remove the pan from the oven.
Use a fork or small knife to prick each popover so the steam can escape.
Serve warm.
Makes: About 10 to 12 popovers
Serving ideas: Serve popovers with fruit, jam, honey, cinnamon butter, or shredded cheese on the side. Avoid adding heavy or wet mix-ins to the batter because they may keep the popovers from rising.
