Layered pasta salads are as beautiful as they are delicious. Colorful vegetables, tender pasta, cheese and a creamy dressing are arranged in clear layers before chilling. The result is a colorful salad that's perfect for picnics, family gatherings, holiday dinners and potlucks.
Cook the pasta according to the package directions until just tender.
Drain, rinse with cold water and allow the pasta to cool completely.
In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper.
In a large clear glass bowl, layer the lettuce, cooked pasta, tomatoes, cucumber, peas, cheddar cheese and bacon.
Spread the dressing evenly over the top of the seven layers.
Sprinkle with green onions.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
Toss the salad gently just before serving.
Kid Chef Tip
For a fun party presentation, layer the salad in small clear plastic cups instead of one large bowl. Each person gets their own individual serving, and it's easy to customize. Leave off the dressing or offer a few different dressings so everyone can choose their favorite.
Easy Variations
Replace the bacon with diced ham or grilled chicken.
Use broccoli florets instead of peas.
Add black olives or sliced bell peppers.
Substitute Monterey Jack or Colby cheese for cheddar.
Use a light ranch dressing in place of the creamy dressing.
