Jell-O
Rainbow (Rainbow Gelatin Squares)
By Kids
Cooking Activities
Bright, wiggly gelatin squares arranged in rainbow
order—an easy, festive dessert kids love! Make each
color in its own pan, chill until set, then cut into
cubes and build a rainbow on a platter. Add whipped
cream “clouds” and gold chocolate coins at the end
for a fun St. Patrick’s Day twist.

Dessert
- No Bake
- Skill Level:
Beginner
Prep: 20 minutes | Chill:
2–3 hours | Yield: About
8–10 cups of gelatin squares (serves 10–12)
Ingredients
- 1 small box gelatin
each: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue
- 1¼ cups hot water
per gelatin box
- Whipped cream (for
“clouds”)
- (Optional) Gold
chocolate coins
Equipment
- 5 small bowls or 5 small shallow pans (one per
color)
- Whisk or spoon
- Knife + spatula
- Serving platter
Instructions
- For each color,
pour gelatin powder into a separate bowl or
shallow pan.
- Add 1¼
cups boiling hot water to each color
and stir until completely dissolved. (Do not add
cold water for this version.)
- Refrigerate
each color until fully set, about 2–3 hours.
- Once set, cut
each color into small squares. Use a spatula to
lift them out.
- Arrange squares
on a platter in rainbow order: red, orange,
yellow, green, blue.
- Add whipped
cream “clouds” at one end of the rainbow. If
desired, add gold chocolate coins near the
clouds for a “pot of gold” look.
Kid-Friendly Tips
- Kids can help sort colors and build the
rainbow pattern
- Adults should handle boiling water and
carrying pans to the fridge
- Use cookie cutters for fun shapes (stars,
hearts) instead of squares
Easy Variations
- Add purple: Include a purple
gelatin box for a fuller rainbow
- Layered rainbow: Pour one
color into a pan, chill until set, then add the
next color on top
- Fruit rainbow: Mix in small
fruit pieces (like mandarin oranges or berries)
after gelatin cools slightly
Notes
Let gelatin cool slightly
(still liquid) before refrigerating if using
plastic bowls to avoid warping. Store leftovers
covered in the refrigerator and serve within 3–4
days for best texture.
