Spider Cake and Spider Cupcakes

This spider cake is an easy Halloween birthday cake idea made from one round cake and extra cupcakes. Use frosting stars, candy eyes, and pipe cleaner legs to create a fun spider-themed cake kids will love.

Spider cake and spider cupcakes

Supplies

  • 1 prepared cake mix or homemade cake batter
  • 1 round cake pan
  • Cupcake liners and muffin pan
  • Black, purple, or other frosting colors
  • Decorating bag with star tip
  • White frosting for eyes
  • Black frosting or mini chocolate chips for pupils
  • Pink or red frosting for smiles
  • Pipe cleaners for legs

Directions

  1. Prepare cake batter according to package or recipe directions.
  2. Bake part of the batter in a round cake pan and use the remaining batter for cupcakes.
  3. Allow the cake and cupcakes to cool completely.
  4. Fill a decorating bag with two frosting colors, such as black and purple.
  5. Using a star tip, cover the round cake and cupcakes with small frosting stars.
  6. Add white frosting circles for eyes.
  7. Add black frosting dots or mini chocolate chips for pupils.
  8. Pipe a crooked smile with pink or red frosting.
  9. Shape pipe cleaners into spider legs.
  10. Tuck pipe cleaner legs under the large cake and gently poke pipe cleaner legs into the sides of cupcakes.

  • Decorate cupcakes with sprinkles.
Safety Note: Pipe cleaners are for decoration only. Remove them before serving the cake or cupcakes.

Easy Spider Cupcakes

For a quicker version, turn plain cupcakes into spiders with frosting, sprinkles, red hot candies, and licorice legs.

  • Prepared cupcakes, cooled
  • Chocolate or black frosting
  • Black sugar sprinkles
  • Red hot candies or candy eyes
  • Black licorice strings

Directions

  1. Frost the tops of cooled cupcakes.
  2. Dip each frosted cupcake into black sugar sprinkles.
  3. Add red hots or candy eyes.
  4. Cut black licorice into short pieces for legs.
  5. Press licorice legs into the sides of each cupcake.
  6. Remove licorice or decorations as needed before serving younger children.
