Makes: 1 Christmas tree cake

Ingredients

  • 1 box cake mix, any flavor (or use your favorite homemade cake recipe)
  • Ingredients called for on the cake mix package
  • 1 can frosting or homemade buttercream
  • Green food coloring (optional)
  • Candy decorations, sprinkles, mini M&M's, gumdrops, or colored sugars
  • Small piece of cake for the tree trunk

Directions

  1. Prepare and bake a rectangular cake according to package or recipe directions.
  2. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  3. Cut the rectangle diagonally from corner to corner to create two large triangles.
  4. Place the triangles together on a serving tray to form a Christmas tree shape.
  5. Alternatively, trim the sides into a zigzag pattern to create pine tree branches.
  6. Cut a small rectangle from leftover cake pieces and place it at the bottom as the tree trunk.
  7. Tint frosting green if desired and spread over the entire tree.
  8. Decorate with candies and sprinkles to resemble ornaments.
  9. Use leftover cake pieces to create small gift shapes around the base of the tree.
  10. Serve immediately or store covered until ready to enjoy.
