Part of the Creative Kitchen Activities Collection
This homemade bath salts page is part of the Homemade Spa Recipes collection and also fits into Creative Kitchen Activities. These projects let kids use kitchen ingredients in creative, hands-on ways.
Homemade bath salts are dry bath mixtures made with ingredients such as Epsom salt, sea salt, baking soda, powdered milk, dried herbs, or a few drops of fragrance. When added to warm bath water, the salts dissolve and create a simple spa-style bath.
For kids, the fun is in the making. They can scoop, measure, stir, tint the salts with color, layer them in jars, design labels, and package the finished bath salts as gifts.
Adult Supervision Note
These projects are not food recipes. They are homemade spa and craft recipes. Supervise children closely, especially when using essential oils, glass jars, hot water, or ingredients that will touch skin.

2 Tablespoons cornstarch

Add several drops of essential oil or fragrance oil.

Store in a sealed jar.
To use, add several spoonfuls to running bath water.
Kid-Friendly Tip: Let kids name their bath salt blend, make a label, and choose a ribbon for the jar.
Salt Art in a Jar
Colorful Bath Salt Art
Salt art in a jar is one of the best homemade bath salt activities for kids because it combines measuring, color mixing, layering, and gift-making. The finished jar looks like sand art but can be used as bath salts.
Ingredients
1 Cup Epsom salt
1 Cup kosher salt or sea salt
2 jars with lids for mixing colors
2 colors liquid food coloring
1 pretty 8 oz. jar
A few drops essential oil or skin-safe fragrance oil
Ribbon and label card
Directions
Mix the Epsom salt and kosher or sea salt together in a bowl.
Place 1 cup of salt mixture into each mixing jar.
Add 13 to 15 drops of food coloring to each jar, using a different color for each one.
Add a few drops of fragrance oil if desired.
Place the lids on the jars and shake until the salts are evenly colored.
Pour the colored salts onto paper towels and let them dry overnight.
Once dry, layer the colors in a clean jar, alternating colors for a sand-art look.
Add the lid, tie with ribbon, and attach a label.
Label the jar: “Use 1 to 2 Tablespoons in a warm bath.”
Creative Kitchen Activity: Have kids experiment with color layers, diagonal jar tilting, and pattern designs before adding the lid.
Gift Idea: Add a handmade tag that says “Homemade Bath Salts” and include the child’s name as the maker.
Lemon Cream Bath Salts
Lemon Cream Bath Salts
This bath salt recipe uses powdered milk for a creamy bath mixture and lemon or citrus scent for a fresh spa-style project.
Ingredients
1 Cup powdered milk
3/4 Cup Epsom salt or sea salt
4 to 5 drops lemon or citrus essential oil
Jar with lid
Directions
Add powdered milk and salts to a bowl.
Stir until evenly mixed.
Add the lemon or citrus oil.
Mix again, or pour into a jar and shake gently with the lid on.
Store in a dry jar.
To use, pour about 1/4 cup under running bath water.
Variation: Try orange, lavender, vanilla, or chamomile scent instead of lemon.
