Fish Filet Sandwiches
Golden Fish Filet Sandwiches
Make crispy homemade fish sandwiches with tender white fish coated in seasoned cracker crumbs and pan-fried until golden. Add cheese if you like, then tuck the fish into whole wheat buns with your favorite sandwich toppings for an easy family meal.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients
- 3/4 pound white fish, such as cod or grouper
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup low-fat buttermilk
- 3/4 cup crushed wheat crackers
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
- 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil, plus more if needed
- 4 slices cheese (optional)
- 4 whole wheat sandwich buns
- Lettuce, tomato, tartar sauce, or other favorite sandwich toppings (optional)
Directions
- Pat the fish dry with paper towels and cut into 4 sandwich-size pieces.
- Place the flour in a shallow bowl and pour the buttermilk into a second shallow bowl.
- In a third bowl, combine the crushed wheat crackers, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley.
- Coat each piece of fish first in flour, then dip it into the buttermilk. Finish by pressing both sides into the seasoned cracker crumbs.
- Heat the canola oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the breaded fish and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until the coating is golden brown and the fish flakes easily. The center of the fish should reach 145°F.
- If using cheese, place a slice over each piece of fish during the last minute of cooking. Cover the skillet briefly to help the cheese melt.
- Place the cooked fish on the whole wheat buns and add lettuce, tomato, tartar sauce, or other favorite toppings.
- Serve warm with pasta salad, macaroni and cheese, vegetables, or oven-baked fries.
Kid Chef Tip
Set up the flour, buttermilk, and cracker crumbs in a row to create a breading station. Kids can help measure the seasonings, crush the crackers, and coat the fish while an adult handles the hot skillet.
Try a Different Coating
For an extra-crispy sandwich, substitute Panko bread crumbs for the crushed wheat crackers. You can also practice this same flour, liquid, and crumb technique with our Coating and Breading Chicken lesson.
