Homemade Sports Drink (Gatorade-Style)

Skip the store-bought sports drinks and make your own refreshing electrolyte drink at home. These simple recipes are easy for kids to help prepare and are great after sports, outdoor play, or hot summer days.

Makes: About 7-8 cups

Simple Homemade Sports Drink

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 100% apple, grape, or lemon juice
  • 6 cups cold water
  • 2 tablespoons honey, sugar, or your favorite sweetener
  • Pinch of kosher or sea salt

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a large pitcher.
  2. Stir or shake until the sweetener and salt are completely dissolved.
  3. For easier mixing, dissolve the sweetener and salt in a little warm water first, then add the remaining cold water.
  4. Refrigerate until chilled.
  5. Serve over ice.

Fruity Sports Drink

Ingredients

  • 8 cups cold water
  • 1/4 cup honey, sugar, or preferred sweetener
  • Pinch of kosher or sea salt
  • 1/2 cup cranberry, orange, or lemon juice
  • 1 packet unsweetened drink mix (Crystal Light® or Kool-Aid®)

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher.
  2. Stir well until dissolved.
  3. Refrigerate until cold.
  4. Pour into reusable water bottles for sports practice or outdoor adventures.
