Molasses Crinkles

Molasses crinkle cookies
These soft molasses crinkle cookies are filled with warm spices and rolled in sugar for a classic old-fashioned cookie treat. Their chewy centers and crackled tops make them perfect for holiday baking, cookie trays, and cozy winter desserts.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • Granulated sugar for rolling

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the shortening and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the beaten egg and molasses and mix well. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the molasses mixture and stir until fully combined. Chill the dough thoroughly until firm enough to handle. Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and dip one side of each ball into granulated sugar. Place the cookies sugar-side up on an ungreased baking sheet about 2 to 3 inches apart. Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until lightly set with crackled tops. Allow cookies to cool slightly before serving.
Yield: About 2 to 3 dozen cookies depending on size.

Kid Cooking Tip

Kids can help roll the dough into balls and dip the tops into sugar before baking.

Variation Ideas

Try adding orange zest, white chocolate drizzle, chopped nuts, or rolling the cookies in cinnamon sugar instead of plain sugar.

Serving Ideas

Serve with milk, hot cocoa, coffee, or add to holiday cookie trays and homemade gift boxes.
Holiday Baking Tip: Chilling the dough helps the cookies keep their shape and creates the classic crinkled texture while baking.
