Ingredient Challenge for Kids
Ingredient challenges help kids practice problem-solving, recipe planning, and creativity in the kitchen. They also work well for homeschool cooking lessons, family cooking nights, classroom activities, and kids cooking clubs.

How the Ingredient Challenge Works
Choose one challenge below. Each challenge gives you a set of ingredients that must be included in your recipe. You can add other ingredients too, but be sure to use every item in the challenge list.
Your recipe can be a snack, breakfast, lunch, dinner, side dish, or even a drink or smoothie. The goal is to invent something new and have fun being creative in the kitchen.
How to Join Our Kids Cooking Challenge
- Pick one of the five ingredient challenges below.
- Gather the required ingredients.
- Create a recipe that uses every listed ingredient.
- Add extra ingredients if needed to complete your dish.
- Write down your recipe name, ingredients, and steps.
- Come back and share your recipe and a picture if you have one.
Fun idea: Let kids judge each other's dishes on creativity, taste, appearance, and how well they used the challenge ingredients.
Enjoy being creative, trying new foods, and practicing kitchen skills along the way.

Challenge idea: Score each recipe on creativity, taste, appearance, and how well the required ingredients were used.
Challenge #1 - 3 Ingredients
You need to use the following ingredients in your recipe:
- Lemon
- Green peas
- Carrots
Now take your three ingredients and create something. Then come back and submit your recipe below.
Recipe Example Challenge #1 - Green Soup

First, boil the green peas until they are soft.
Second, mash the peas until they are smooth and mushy.
After that, cut the carrots and boil them until soft.
Then add the carrots into the boiling peas and stir for at least 10 minutes.
When the soup is ready, pour it into a bowl. Add a dollop of yogurt on top, then finish with a few drops of lemon juice and a little lemon zest.
Challenge #2 - 4 Ingredients
You need to use the following ingredients in your recipe:
- Spices or seasonings of choice
- Mango
- Chicken or fish
- Green beans
Now take these ingredients and create your recipe.
Recipe Example Challenge #2 - Mango Curry

- Slice chicken.
- Mash mango.
- Slice green beans.
Sprinkle the chicken with curry powder, sugar, salt, and pepper. Fry the chicken in a teaspoon of oil until it is no longer pink. Add 1 cup of chicken stock, the beans, 2 tablespoons of chutney or pickle, and the mango. Cook until the chicken is done and the beans are tender.
Thicken with cornflour mixed with a little water and serve over white rice.
Ingredient Challenge #3 - Egg Challenge
You need to use the following ingredients in your recipe:
- Eggs, however many you need
- Green onions
- One fruit of your choice
Now take your three ingredients and create something.
Recipe Example Challenge #3 - Pineapple Italian Omelet

Omelet:
Take 2 eggs and cook them in a pan with Italian cheese and green onions. When the omelet is cooked, fold it halfway in the pan, then slide it onto a plate.
Pineapple:
Drain the pineapple and place it on the plate beside the omelet.
Cream:
Beat egg white with a mixer until thick. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar and gently fold to mix.
Ingredient Challenge #4 - Meat Challenge
You need to use the following ingredients in your recipe:
- One meat product such as chicken, pork, beef, turkey, or lamb, or use tofu or another vegetarian substitute
- Nuts, any type you like
- One vegetable of your choice
Now take your three ingredients and create something.
Recipe Example Challenge #4 - Chinese Chop Suey

- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- 1 cup sliced fresh white mushrooms
- 3 cups fresh bean sprouts
- 8-ounce can sliced water chestnuts, drained and chopped
- 1/2 grated peeled carrot
- 2 tablespoons sweet and sour sauce
- 1 tablespoon sliced green onion
- 1/2 cup sliced ham chunks
Heat the cooking oil in a frying pan on medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the broccoli, ham, and mushrooms. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring often, until the broccoli and mushrooms start to soften.
Add the bean sprouts, water chestnuts, and grated carrot. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring often, until hot.
Add the sauce and stir until the vegetables are coated. Sprinkle with green onion. Serves 2.
Ingredient Challenge #5 - 1-1-1 Challenge
You need to use the following ingredients in your recipe:
- One fruit of your choice
- One vegetable of your choice
- One dairy product of your choice
Now take your three ingredients and create something.
Recipe Example Challenge #5 - Cottage Cheese and Apple Salad

Ingredients
- 4 cups cottage cheese
- 3 to 4 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, sliced, and diced
- 4 thin strips chopped lettuce
1. Get a medium bowl and spread the chopped lettuce in it.
2. Add the cottage cheese evenly on top of the lettuce.
3. Sprinkle the peeled, sliced, and diced apples over the cottage cheese.
4. Mix everything together well.
5. Enjoy your salad.
